I’m Carita Wallius, a Helsinki-based artist and graphic designer.
I’ve always been drawn to things that are a little imperfect, quiet and hard to explain. A certain colour, a fragile line, a surface worn by time, or simply a feeling that stays with you.
My work moves between painting and printmaking, from soft abstract landscapes to the human figure. I work intuitively, often letting the materials and the process lead the way rather than knowing exactly where a piece will end up.
For me, making art is about noticing. Small shifts, quiet moments, contrasts and emotions that don’t necessarily need words.
I hope my work leaves room for you to find something of your own in it.
My Story
My path to becoming an artist hasn’t been a straight one.
I’m a graphic designer, artist and mother of three boys. Before finding my way here, I spent many years working with both international and local brands, creating visual identities and design. Somewhere along the way, I also had my own furniture upholstery business – another chapter that taught me to appreciate materials, craftsmanship and the beauty of things made by hand.
About eight years ago, I decided to change direction and went back to study graphic design and art. It turned out to be one of those decisions that quietly changes everything.
Today, art has become an increasingly important part of my life and work. Painting and printmaking give me a different kind of freedom from design – a place where everything doesn’t have to have a purpose or an explanation.
I’ve always believed in keeping things simple. I find inspiration in architecture and furniture, imperfect surfaces, minimal lines, colours and the endless details found in nature. Often it’s something very small that catches my attention and eventually finds its way into my work.
And when I’m not working or making art, you’ll most likely find me spending time with my family, playing tennis or somewhere outdoors with my dog.
